Express Your Power

Express Your Power Video Series Trailer

Inspired by witnessing a nationwide racial reckoning as cross-cultural individuals united in protest for social justice, we came up with the idea of a media and information literacy learning video series, explores the relationship between media, civil rights, and social change.
We decided to produce a four-part video series:
1. It introduces the First Amendment as the foundation of respect for others and a central human right in America.
2. Emphasizing the significance of personal truth-telling;
3. Educating storytellers on the many media formats and resources they can use to tell their stories – the series fosters community building.
4. Gaining more insight into each other’s life experiences promotes better social inclusion and strengthens our democracy.
Taking an innovative public pedagogy approach, we partnered with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library in New York City. Discover how popular short-form explainer videos combined with public events reach an audience of e-learners and empower them to contribute to the global narrative.
With the video series at the center of our multifaceted audience engagement strategy, we have expanded our presence to include LibGuides, public events, a social media presence, a website, and additional digital learning resources.
As the Head of Production, I led the team in creating the animation script, storyboard, shot list, and characters. Once we began motion graphic production, we held weekly meetings to ensure we stayed on schedule.
After the first cut, we met regularly with our partner and distributor, NAMLE and NYPL, to gather feedback and make necessary edits. After six months of hard work and countless revisions, we locked the picture and successfully completed the entire series.
The Express Your Power series has earned attention and awards from a number of prestigious international institutions, including

Our team has been invited by leading conferences to present the creative process behind the Express Your Power series and the learning outcomes designed into each episode. GLOBAL FEMINIST NETWORK

Work Type: Social Activism

Since 2021, I have participated in activism with Chinese feminists in the U.S.. I take photos and create videos to capture significant moments during gatherings, protests, and movements. News media and feminist social media accounts use my works to tell the stories of the movement and advocate for gender equality issues in China.
In a society like China, where social movements are suppressed under censorship. The social videos we make in the U.S. take on great significance of the transnational #metoo in China movement.
By publishing short videos about activism on social media, we amplify the message of Chinese feminists’ resistance and resilience, making their voices heard despite the barriers they face. The videos become an integral part of those actions.
Throughout the year, as an activist and content creator, I have grown from a volunteer video maker to a community organizer.
By creating impactful content for Chinese feminist and queer communities and earning recognition from major Western media, we have successfully amplified our reach and influence.
Chinese feminist activists are now building global communities and uniting to advocate for gender equality.
Leveraging social media platforms like Instagram, grassroots groups across Europe, Japan, the U.S., and Canada collaborate to launch powerful social campaigns.

2020 ElECTION

Work Type: Video Journalism

During the 2022 presidential election, I produced videos for the Voice of America China Branch, covering topics such as politics, public health, the economy, and U.S.-China relations. These videos were published on their official website, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook accounts.
Before heading to the streets to interview people about the 2020 election, my producer made editorial decisions to define the main topic for each video.
Based on these topics, I crafted interview questions and selected interviewees in public spaces around Philadelphia and New York City. The goal was to ensure diverse demographic representation among voters and to capture their authentic opinions on camera.

#FreeMask Project Introduction Video

#freemask uses digital communication to discuss how the lack and abuse of freedom of expression impacted Chinese people's lives domestically and overseas in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project includes a short documentary, performance art, portrait photography, and statement fashion. The short movie showcases all the approaches.
The short movie showcases how the suppression of speech and freedom of expression caused problems around the same incident and how human beings responded to the issues.
To promote the movie and advocate the message, I was featured in a news report, a podcast show, and a film screening event.

Underground

Work Type: Short Documentary

Underground is a short documentary series about talents and artists who live or work underground in New York City.
The goal of the series is to develop a model for artists to tell stories about their creative journals and career paths in the format of short documentary films.
I shot, edited and color-corrected this episode about Ishmael Levi, a musician of the city, a love of art, and the melody of the subway. Like Ishmael, many artists in New York have more than one professional life. This episode looks into Ishmael's underground one in the MTA subway.
I directed, co-filmed, edited, and color-corrected this episode about Matthew Weitz, a theater and movie actor who lived in a basement apartment in Brooklyn. Matthew came to New York as an experiment. But it did not seem that Matthew would stop here.

Harper's BAZAAR: Picnic with Strangers

As the second videographer, I contributed to this fashion editorial piece for Harper's BAZAAR China.

On a sunny day in Prospect Park, we approached everyday New Yorkers and invited them to become magazine models for 15 minutes.

music video: song of Freedom

Paola Di Leo, an Italian singer and songwriter, approached me after winning a contest with Honiro Label Record Music in 2019. She wanted a music video for her first single with Honiro, Song of Freedom, a love letter to her life in New York City. To avoid the clichés of typical tourist imagery, I created a storyboard that captured NYC through the eyes of a foreign artist. We shot the video at four iconic locations across the boroughs: the Joker Stairs in the Bronx, DUMBO in Brooklyn, Wall Street in Manhattan, and the Statue of Liberty on Staten Island.

The single and video were released in December 2019, earning praise from both Honiro and Paola. Through unconventional angles and a cinematic style, I juxtaposed the surreal texture of the visuals with the city’s steel-and-concrete jungle to reflect Paola’s romance and dreams.

Willo Assembly Instructions

Willo, a Manhattan-based company, specializes in producing dental products for children.

I was hired as the videographer, gaffer, and editor to create the assembly instruction videos. This project was especially enjoyable as I got to incorporate the brand’s colors into the visual creative process, both during production and in post-production.

Why we dance

During the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre was forced to shut down. Like many performers, the dancers adapted by continuing their routines and practices at home, rehearsing over Zoom until the world began to return to “normal.”

The video was shot during the pandemic. I collaborated with Amanda Selwyn and her dancers to capture outdoor dance footage near the Hudson River. By combining this with recordings of their Zoom practices, I edited a video that told the story of how the team persevered through the pandemic and eventually reunited to dance together again.
